Day 29 Tanami Tootle 42km (and totally worn out, down to 1km stages between rests)

Don set fire and cooked as I was so tired I could hardly sit up for an hour after arriving at camp. Problem was mainly the dust and pea gravel in the last 22km, energy sapping pushing wheels through it. Don did much better on his 70mm tyres (I am on 40mm).

Big news! Don got his glasses back; recap – Don left his glasses at a lunch stop 3 days ago (by roadside leg of a “Floodway, Indicators short depth” sign but didn’t discover it until 20km downwind).

It took me a day to find how to get the lunch stop location from first RidewithGPS for distance from Yuendumu, then look on the Garmin InReach tracker for the deviation from the crown of the road and ask InReach for lat/long and export as message to me. Then ask two cars that had friendly drivers to look for glasses near post at given lat/long and pass glasses to another car coming north to give back to Don.

Crickets (no response) for two days and then today a southbound motorcyclist gave them to Don. He had been given them at Wolffe Creek Crater (driver at Tilmouth Well RH was given them by a south bound motorist but passed us going north before we got on the road one morning?) to ‘give to the cyclists still on the road to the south’. I nearly hugged the guy.

Thx to all involved, including Tilmouth Well RH staff.

Might reach WA border tomorrow (49 km) if road improves.

A cattle truck roadtrain driver on way to Suppljack Station gave me a 750ml blackcurrant Powerade at The Granites Mill (closed gold mine), another driver gave a mandarin which Don and I shared for dinner.
