DAY 48 4 AUGUST KATHERINE. SOME GO TO THE GORGES AND SOME JUST GORGE

After some discussion about where to put the tents (a long term resident at the Kway Crossing Resort said ‘not too close to the fence because the locals on the way home from the pub hop over said fence to get resources to return to the pub) and then about where to drive the tent pegs (‘why did the office put tents here? Your tent pegs will puncture the irrigation pipes! Ahh well, stay and we’ll find the holes when you pack up your tent.’). Brother Peter and Rob pulled their camp out of the Land Cruiser. The surprise was Peter setting up in his daughter’s purple swag (a serious bush swag though) and her pink mosquito net.

First project of the morning was booking the Toyota got in for a fuel line clean the next day. Then the keen ones (Christine, Peter and Rob) filled the seats in the Toyota and headed off to Katherine Gorge (Ntmiluk) for a flat-bottomed boot and crocodile feeding trip. I just walked into town to find a pie but couldn’t get one to match the excellent one in Mataranka. Then it was stocking up on more comfort food and back to camp.

Brother Peter, Stuart, Scottish Rob and Brian at Katherine Knotts Landing caravan park. Peter and Rob did a 5000 km loop drive from Longreach to meet Stuart in Katherine.

The Gorgers’ got back mid-afternoon chattering happily about how impossible it was to know if a crocodile was in the muddy water and how amazinly fast the non-existent crocodile could leap out of the water to eat the chook dangling on a string.

Bruce headed off mid-afternoon to see Emily Falls on the way to Pine Creek. Bye Bruce.

Christine and Brian organised a fantastic roast chook and salad dinner for a nice end to the day.

Brian and Christine and another one of their fantastic meals at Katherine Knotts Landing caravan park.

Then to bed. The excitement during the night (that we all missed) was the locals cutting their way in through the fence at 2 am to steal the campground works all terrain vehicle. We were fine however, maybe the pink mosquito net and the heavy masculine snoring put them off?
