Adding the new gear

The bulk of my gear is as used on the previous rides but updated where necessary;

  • a new tent – Big Agnes Mazanares 2; compared to my
    18 year old OzExplorer ridge tent the Mazanares 2 is
    • lighter (1.3kg vs old 2.3kg)
    • forms a longer pack due to the longer pole sections
    • freestanding and doesn’t need tent pegs or my packs in the corners to hold it up on hard ground
    • hopefully doesn’t have failing zips, a leaking tub and loose flapping rain fly problems of my old tent
    • has gimmicky built-in LED lights in the top seams
  • canister gas burner replacement for the alcohol burner in my Trangia cook set
    • (some US National Parks apparently won’t allow unthrottled alcohol stoves and
    • USA methylated spirits has a lower heat content than Australian 100% alcohol ‘metho’, so
    • got a $25 canister gas burner from Bulin (China) (vs $79 for Trangier equivalent) made to drop into the burner space of the windshield of the Trangia
  • a new sleeping mat (probably a concertina style closed cell foam to replace my Anaconda self-inflating mat that hasn’t held air since it popped 18 years ago when I left it inflated during the day)
  • new sleeping bag liner (current one so thin it tears every time I roll over)
  • new rechargeable powerbank (I got two, a 13000 mAh Anker PowerCore to run my phone and GPS during the day and a
    20000 mAh Imuto to charge my phone, GPS and camera in those times when I find myself 2-3 days between overnight power points. My current three year old 10000 mAh Lenovo only holds about 1/3 of its rated power so is on the way out).
