Day 16 1 August the last night on the road

Climbing the 120m Chichester Range from Python Pool first thing in the morning was something I could have done without. Near the top Bruce stopped for a photo opportunity and we had some discussion as to whether or not the pyramid-shaped hill on the plain in the distance was Pyramid Hill Station (it was). Then it was picking our way back over the ten kms of rubbish corrugations to the Karratha Road turnoff and bitumen.

Aboriginal birding hide on the Chichester Ranges at Mount Herbert. Hunters would hold a feather above the rocks and grab the legs of a raptor eagle or kite as it tried to snatch the ‘chick’.

From here it was 34 km toward Karratha to a to a secret gorge only the locals and supposedly Bruce know just off the Pannawonica Road. We didn’t find this desert Shangri La but had a pleasant enough lunch at the bottom of the Chichester Range.

The old Karratha Pannawonica Road as we looked for Bruce’s secret pool for a lunch stop.

As we left an empty ore train headed back up the hill. The driver’s window opened and, instead of waving to us as I expected, the driver threw out an empty water bladder. Oik!

By dark we were about 52 km out of Karratha and Bruce was in ecstasy seeing the Cooya Pooya dolerites for the first time.
We camped just of the rail line and had our last bush dinner on for last bush camp among the Cooya Pooya dolerites. Things were rustling in the spinifex near my sleeping bag but my torch beam sent him/her away and nothing got me during the night.
