Day 1 17 July 2018 Karijini- Nanutarra roadhouse to Homestead creek

I was here on my first Australian crossing in 2002, alas the salad buffet is no more!

After 21 hours on the bus from Perth we arrived at the Nanutarra Roadhouse at about 4 pm yesterday. After finding a spare flat camping spot that was not going to get us squashed by maneuvering trucks or grey nomad RVs, we had our first pasta dinner in the Magic Saucepan.

Next morning we had a veeerrrrry relaxed start. First Bruce took time adjusting his bike and load. Then I had a last brewed coffee at the roadhouse. While doing this the bus that left us here yesterday came in on its return run from Port Hedland. Some joking about us being reluctant to leave and then we left about 10 am.

Five kilometres north on the North-West Coastal Highway we turned right onto the road to Paraburdoo and Tom Price. A ripping tailwind pushed us along for the first 40 kms until lunch on a log. Unfortunately the wind then died off and the last 20 kms to the RV park beside the road at Homestead Creek. No water but recent rain had grown plenty of long soft grass to camp on. More pasta and chats with the grey nomads on site.

Side note: five kilometres short of Homestead Creek we passed a 4t truck set up with a homemade camper body on it. We later camped near this van in Paraburdoo and helped the owner’s kid with her homework. Back in Perth six months later I saw the same van and guy (Joe) on a TV grab about survivalists in Australia preparing for the breakdown of civilisation.
