day 11 27 July Resting in Tom Price and rail access road permit

A rest day back in Tom Price. After a basic pub meal last night, we had a rest day where I attempted to fix a broken spoke on my bike (didn’t work, couldn’t get the rear cluster off (note after ride; took the wheel to three bike shops where two friendly mechanics bent their chain whips trying to get cluster off and finally TBE in Belmont used a big forged chain whip managed to free it) and restock the food supplies.

We happened to be in Tom Price the very day that the Brumby’s bakery opened. This was important as it gave the locals somewhere else to get bread and pastries rather than Coles supermarket. Most of the town seemed to turn out for the occasion.

I also went to the Tourist Centre to sit for my safety test to get a Rail Access Road Permit to allow me to ride the access road back to Karratha. Basically the safety training was “don’t interfere with the trains, remember it is a dirt road and there might be washouts and follow instructions from the rail staff”.
