Day 15 Tunnel Creek, Jandamurra and Lilimilura police station by bus

The girls excelled themselves today. They stalked the driver of the Kimberley Wild tour bus and asked if we could join his tour (starting in Broome at 6 am) at midday as he left Windjana Gorge for Tunnel Creek cave 50 km further east on the Fairfield-Leopold Downs Road. He checked with his boss who said ‘yes’ and after waiting at the gorge picnic shed we were aboard.

Big shout out for Kimberley Wild Tours. Good people.

Tunnel Creek was one of the bases of legendary aboriginal resistance warrior Jandamarra as he tried to fight off encroachments by white pastoralists. The whites knew where the cave (which passes completely through the Napier Range) entrances were but he didn’t come out? Jandamarra knew about the collapsed cave roof halfway along. Secret entrance to the batcave.

Southern entrance to Tunnel Creek cave, Jandmurra was shot and killed here.

After a couple of hours walking/wading through the Tunnel Creek cave we hung around looking hungry as the paying tourists ate their lunch, we then made good inroads into the leftover sandwiches and melon.

After stopping at the ruins of the old Lilimilura police station where Jandamarra made a big mistake and killed a particularly vicious police officer Kimberley Wild dropped us at the Wandjana Gorge NP turnoff.

While I could ride about 60 km a day (riding uses the quadriceps and gluteus muscles) I took a long time to limp the kilometre back to camp (walking uses the gastrocnemius muscle and the soleus muscles of the calf which weren’t getting enough blood as those muscles are below the blocked popliteal artery behind the knee). Then another dinner with some effort to start finishing off our food supplies and bed.
