Day 11 and 12 and 13. 22-24 April 2016 Kalgoorlie. 37 kms

Left Coolgardie for what seemed like an exceptionally hilly and long 37 kms in to Kalgoorlie.
I think it was the frequent traffic that put me off, lots of road trains going to mines and Toyotas and HiLux’s doing same. Headwind didn’t help.

None of the vehicles were particularly interested in a cyclist.

Paddy Hannan who trod on a gold nugget and started the gold rush that has produced more gold than any similar area in the world. But name his two companions?

Arrived Kalgoorlie about 10 am and checked in to the Tourist Office for caravan park advice. They sent me to the park furthest from the town centre (of course) but it had the advantage of being within earshot of the roaring trucks in The Big Pit and next to the jets taking off from the airport. Otherwise well maintained and pleasant enough until the power board connecting the kettle in the camp kitchen burnt out and blew the breakers. No more WiFi for the campers.

Support crew Robyn had forwarded on some back documents that (being for Queensland, always 20 years behind) needed a Justice of the Peace to witness (rare species, but Qld had already told me that Notaries would not suffice). Spent most of the day tracking down a JP and very grateful for his community minded attitude in being available.

Another holdup with documentation saw me in and out of the bank trying to get things sorted. Seems I would have to stay until Tuesday after the ANZAC day holiday to sort it out.

In the interim rather than spend time walking up and down Hannan St I booked a tour of The Big Pit. Well worth it to see how much dirt from how deep (600 m, or twice the height of the Perth Darling Scarp) man is prepared to dig to chase gold and a trace of Tellurium.

The Big Pit is a deep hole - twice as deeep as the Darling Scarp at Perth is high. The exposed tunnels from earlier mining shows how much ore underground mining misses.

Took the bike to the AvantiPlus bike shop in Boulder Street on Saturday morning. Highly recommend this shop (thanks Bruce for looking it up) as very professionally run, friendly and cheap. They trued my wonky replaced spoke on the rear wheel and supplied half a dozen spare spokes. The owner was impressed by the Bicycle of Awesomeness aka the Wayward Cape York. Nice touring design and the consideration that meant that only one spoke length was needed for all sides front and rear was a nice touch for long distance cyclists.

Bank officer Susan worked Saturday to get me (and presumably others) sorted so we decided that I could head out on Monday and fix any issues by email. Thanks Susan.

A last night in Kalgoorlie looking in amazement at how spread out my gear had got over three days.
