2020 – TransAmerica

2020 TransAmerica. This is one of the classic long distance bicycle rides and I am about to start it.

Straggling Stu’s proposed TransAmerica epic – 8000 kms (5000 miles) in about 120 days

The route is based on the Adventure Cycling TransAmerica and other long distance cycling routes but will undoubtedly include a few variations of my own.

The TransAmerica routes have the advantages of being relatively safe and low stress. This generally means they avoid both the big highways and the big cities but do include the scenic bits that make the long hours in the saddle pass more easily.

Also, using established TransAm routes means following the wheel tracks of the host of like minded souls on bikes who have gone before. It is likely therefore that the locals know what the two wheeled contraption is, know how to drive around it and hopefully are more tolerant of our quirks. Quirks such as wanting to fill our water bottles frequently, eating lots of pancakes and pasta and not being able to say exactly where we will stop each day as the hills, the wind and the legs dictate the distance.
